Is it a Chiffchaff? No it's a Willow Warbler, listen to its sweet, cascading song. It's probably one of the most iconic spring sounds. At first glance Willow Warblers could be mistaken for Chiffchaffs, it's their song that gives them away. That and their their legs. For the most part it could be said that Willow Warblers have pale legs whilst Chiffchaff's are almost black. Willow Warblers are making their way back from their over-wintering grounds in Southern Africa. Quite a journey. Listen out

A Chiffchaff chirping away from the tree tops. This warbler gets its name from its simple distinctive song, a repetitive cheerful chiff-chaff. This song is one of the first avian signs that spring has returned. | The Robin Whisperer

The Chiffchaff and the Willow Warbler. These two can have you tearing your hair out when you're trying to tell them apart when they're flitting around in the trees, so a chance to see them up close and compare them is always useful. For me, that yellow eye-stripe of the Willow Warbler (more ornithologically known as a supercilium 🤓) is the best way to tell them apart visually. However - the absolute guaranteed way to know what you're looking at is to wait for them to sing in the spring, as they

The song of the male Blackcap can sound similar to that of a speeded up Blackbird, but a little lighter. See if you can pick one out of the songbird chorus that is gearing up, they'll often sit in trees and bushes in parks, gardens and woodlands. Whilst relatively good numbers of Blackcaps spend the winter here, some of these birds will move further north as spring approaches and birds from southern Europe will arrive. It's only the male birds who have the 'black cap' with the females and young

'A little bit of bread and no cheeeeese' - the iconic song of the Yellowhammer, associated with warm, sunny country walks and hazy afternoons. Yellowhammers are seed eaters, predominantly eating grass seeds, however they feed their chicks, insects. They are often seen foraging and feeding on the ground throughout the year and will join larger flocks of finches in the winter. They also nest on or close to the ground, like so many of our countryside birds. Yellowhammers are in the 'bunting' family
