Diffusion Vs Absorption So, what is the difference between diffusion and absorption, and what are they really for? Diffusion is the breaking up of sound waves into a lot of individual, smaller waves. Kind of like the way an ocean wave will break into smaller waves when it hits a patch of rocks. The waves aren't gone, they just got smaller and less powerful. This is useful in certain situations where you don't want to remove sound from the room, but you do want to tame and mitigate it's strength.
