Illinois River, navigable stream of northern and central Illinois, U.S. It is formed by the junction of the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers in Grundy county, about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Joliet. It flows generally west across the state until just north of Hennepin, where it turns abruptly

The watershed contains the drainage basins of several of the Illinois’ major rivers including the Des Plaines, Kankakee, Fox, Vermilion, 39° Mackinaw, Spoon, Sangamon, and La Moine Rivers. The Illinois River watershed recently has become a focus of state and federal agencies and other organizations interested in integrated watershed management.
