The Colorado River Basin provides water to nearly 40 million people, both within and outside of the 246,000 square mile drainage basin, and irrigates nearly 5.5 million acres of agricultural lands in the western U.S.

Rising in the Rocky Mountains, the Colorado River traverses 1,450 miles of some of the most beautiful and inhospitable territory on earth, flowing through Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California before entering the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California and ultimately emptying into the Gulf of California.

This map utilizes data from the Colorado River Basin GIS Open Data Portal to explore the 250,000 square miles of the Colorado River Basin, including its major reservoirs, dams, and the major cities that rely on it for water.
