In 1975 the Summit, later named the Compaq Center, became home of the Houston Rockets and was a great venue for concerts until the City sold it in 2005 and it became the Godautorium. After the loss of the Summit, Houston lost it's last big hall suitable for concerts. Now we are stuck with Cynthia Woods Pavilion and the Toyota Center.

Basketball, ice hockey, wrestling, and indoor soccer were all held at the arena, which had a capacity of 16,800. The arena hosted the NBA Finals on four different occasions and was Houston's main concert venue throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1971, the National Basketball Association's San Diego Rockets were purchased by new ownership group Texas Sports Investments, who moved the franchise to Houston. The city, however, lacked an indoor arena suitable to host a major sports franchise.
