LOS ANGELES (AP) — A dangerous, multiday heat wave descended on much of California and the U.S. Southwest, with near-record temperatures expected along with a higher risk of wildfires.

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine and other institutions have spotted a contradiction in worldwide wildfire trends: Despite a 26% decline in total burned area from 2002 to 2021, the number of people exposed to wildfires has surged by nearly 40%.

According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, the Level 3 evacuations for the neighborhood between Dillard Road, Hidden Meadows Drive, Skyhawk Way and Ridge Top Drive in Southeast Eugene were initially lowered to a Level 2 Thursday night, before being moved down to a Level 1 a short while later.
