The historic, aging ocean liner that a Florida county plans to turn into the world’s largest artificial reef has departed from south Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront.

The legendary and iconic ocean liner, once considered a marvel of American shipbuilding, has departed for one final voyage.

The SS United States, once the largest passenger ship built entirely in the US, has been towed from Philadelphia after nearly 30 years. Launched in 1951, the ship was a symbol of luxury and innovation, carrying nearly a million passengers before its retirement in 1969.
