CIA security officers shot and injured a woman who approached the front gates of the agency in a car around 4 a.m. ET on Thursday morning, according to a law enforcement source and another person familiar with the matter.

A woman was shot Thursday morning by security guards outside the CIA headquarters in Virginia, a person familiar with the matter told NBC News. Shots were fired early in the morning, prompting what the CIA said was a "security incident." The shooting was nonfatal.

An anonymous source said the suspect, identified as a young U.S. citizen, had a history of driving under the influence.
