New legislation seeks to expand drone defense capabilities at U.S. military bases, following unauthorized drone activity over Langley Air Force Base in 2023.

At SOF Week, BI saw a number of counter-drone systems, including new shotguns and ammo as a last line of defense for the soldier in a drone fight.

The project brings together: OUSD A&S, the Northern Plains EAS Test Site, Grand Forks County and GrandSKY, a local UAV-specific business development facility. Other members of the Project ULTRA team include NASA, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the FAA and several industry partners.

Rising concerns about the misuse of drones have led to the development of new technologies designed to counter unmanned aircraft.

Non-kinetic options include jamming, which temporarily cuts the drone’s signal so it can’t go home, but can affect more than just the suspicious drone; spoofing, which swaps signals with the drone to give it new directives; and cyber takeover.

The US Air Force loaded an F-15E jet with 42 APKWS II rockets, showcasing a potential low-cost solution for countering enemy drones.
