Mastercard Inc said on Thursday it would pause work on its implementation of a new payments code for gun merchants, citing the complexities raised by pending laws in a number of U.S. states.

Visa, Mastercard and Discover announced they will pause a plan to implement a new merchant category code for the nation’s gun retailers after political pressure from Republicans.

It joins Mastercard and American Express, which also said they plan to move forward with categorizing gun shop sales.
