Ideally, I'd like to sync my work calendar in a 1-way direction with a personal calendar in OS X such as iCal.

iCal can show a Birthdays calendar. Google Apps has one (maybe left over from Snow Leopard? I don't know) too, and I want to sync them. Right now iCal knows more birthdays than Google does.
