Storm Team 10 and the National Hurricane Center are tracking two tropical waves for tropical development that are located in the central and eastern Atlantic. The first wave in the central Atlantic has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical system as the wave moves northwest into the western Atlantic.

There is a Fox 26 Storm Alert in place for Friday afternoon due to expected scattered and heavy storms between 2-9p.m.

The Outer Banks — essentially sand dunes sticking out of the ocean a few feet above sea level — are vulnerable to erosion. Storm surges can cut through them, washing tons of sand and debris onto roads and sometimes breaking up pavement and creating new inlets.

Erin made an explosive debut, taking the mantle as the first hurricane and first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm surged in strength over the weekend, becoming a powerful Category 5 hurricane with wind speeds hitting 160 mph at its peak.

The first area has been under the eyes of the National Hurricane Center for a few days as it emerged off Africa’s west coast.

A wave near the Leeward Islands is likely to develop this weekend, with a 70% chance of becoming a depression. Invest 99L off Africa has a 40% chance. An area near the Azores has a low chance of development.
