The Guardians spent most of September chasing down the Tigers and beat them on the final day of the regular season for the biggest comeback in the standings in MLB history. Fate conspired to pit the two teams against each other in the wild-card series, which naturally went to a winner-take-all Game 3.
The MLB playoffs continued today as three teams staved off elimination while the Dodgers beat the Reds to advance to the Division Series. The Guardians beat the Tigers, the Padres beat the Cubs, and the Yankees beat the Red Sox today to force Game 3s tomorrow in those series.
All the way over on the west coast, the Mariners picked up a much-needed 3-2 win against the Tigers, with Jorge Polanco and Julio Rodríguez each playing hero. Polanco hit two solo home runs off of Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, then Rodríguez delivered the go-ahead double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
