The State Department is proposing requiring applicants for business and tourist visas to post a bond of up to $15,000 to apply to enter the United States.

Travelers from some countries may have to post a bond of up to $15,000 before entering the U.S. as part of a new year-long pilot program, according to a Federal Registrar notice. The program will apply to people from countries the Department of State has identified as having high visa overstay rates or deficient screening and vetting information.

Some visitors to the U.S. may soon have to post a bond of up to $15,000 before they are granted a visa to visit the country. In a notice posted to the Federal Register on Monday, the State Department said it would begin a 12-month trial of visa bonds starting in 15 days.
