Hi White Wing doesn't appear to have either stone ballast or water ballast tanks. Why does the REAPER not use modern water ballast tanks to balance her mast? It could save the joint wear of elderly volunteers carrying the traditional heavy stone ballast and be safer if REAPER rolled too far and the stone ballast shifted.

Reaper does not use modern water ballast tanks to balance her mast for several reasons. First of all, as she is a traditional boat we try to use traditional methods where possible. Additionally there are practical reasons for not using water ballast tanks. Having a water ballast means we would have to have big tanks bolted to the frames with no easy access to the bilge to check the condition of the timbers on a yearly basis. This is very important in a wooden boat. During the winter the ballast is moved to increase the air circulation in the bilge and keep the level of humidity as low as possible, which is not possible with a water ballast. Finally the museum tries its best to avoid dangerous sea conditions and heavy winds with its boats. These are the only circumstances when the boat could turn and the ballast moved. It is always possible to have bad weather but we always keep an eye on the sea conditions before using either of our two seagoing vessels. We follow healthy and safety procedures for all aspects of the work on our fleet, regardless of who is doing the work.
Hi, when and why did the St Ayles Trust come replace the National Trust for Scotland as managers of this museum?

I'd like to know why the Scottish Fisheries Museum representative's answer stays at the top with 0 helpful votes? They've not voted up Nickd171, only saying instead that his description was good. I voted Nickd171 up but the attraction representative stays at the top and the person tries to claim that no less than 'several sculls are on display in dioramas with interpretation!' Would they care to offer now where in the museum these 'several with text details' are actually located?
I'd like to know what a 'Great Line Scull' does, it's one of many bits of junk lying around with no explanation and asking the staff gets a stony silence, as if they don't want to share any of their knowledge. There's one in the Main Boat Gallery and another in a BBC internet featured painting by John McGhee of 'Alex Black making (one) in his loft'.

These frame style line baskets were used all around the coast of Scotland for line fishing.
